In an EIFS, adhesives and mechanical fasteners are used to attach insulation board to the exterior wall. This method can be used to attach the board to either a solid brick or stone wall or to a stud wall with a plywood substrate. After the insulation board, which is made of a Styrofoam-like material, comes a metal mesh to reinforce the exterior and give it some additional strength. Over the mesh, a basecoat and finish coat layer are applied, one on top of the other, to create a moisture-proof barrier. The finish coat also gives the building a decorative, crack resistant exterior.
